Time…it is a finite resource, some might say it’s the most precious resource around, more valuable than gold and more useful than oil. However, I think time is the most underrated and under appreciated resource we as human beings possess.
Now it is true we can be very efficient and very effective with our time when we choose to be. But, more often than not, this burst of productivity is usually short lived. We forget that there are 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, and 365 days in a year.
What is that supposed to mean Jacob? Well I think, and this is just one mans opinion, that we are bound by social norms, bound by the 40 hour work week, bound by what we write on our time sheets. There’s nothing physically stopping you from working until midnight every night, or waking up early and getting going from 5am, okay it may not be completely sustainable but hear me out.
There’s nothing stopping you outworking and outsmarting your competition by hustling longer, harder and better than them. But why don’t you?
Sure not many employers will pay you to do 18hrs per day and it is likely you might waste a bit of time in the early hours of the morning or as you rub your eyes awake approaching midnight but you’d still easily be putting in the hard yards for longer than anyone else in your office, study group, or city and that is where real passion is discovered and new ideas created.
So what, working longer hours, hustling a bit more, what will that get me?
I’m so glad you asked! It’s easy to make the connection that if you’re working longer you’ll likely be getting more done but if you’re in a sales or performance related role that means you’ve got more time to do those things you never get around to do like reviewing your database or systemising your inbox or researching and basically everything you always mean to get around to in your day to day but “never get the chance to” plus everything else you struggle to fit into a day. In extending your hours you’ll also be able to refine and develop your schedule and workflow better but that’s for another time.
My call to you today, if you have taken some or your valuable time and invested a few minutes in reading this article, is to go out and do it, stay up late, wake up early, invest time in your time. Get those jobs done that you know you should be doing but never get around to because you simply can’t find the time. You’ve got the time, you just don’t use it…remember 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week and 365 days in a year.
